John Degen
John Degen is the founder of Visioneers and is a Certified Family Business Specialist whose practice focuses on the planning needs owners of private businesses who are in their growth and mature stages.
John cut his teeth in the financial services industry for the past 33 years. Over the last 15 years he has refined his ability to successfully design and execute exit strategies for business owners.
Many successful business owners find themselves wondering how they will transition from the success they have created to the kind of lasting significance they desire. This is a question John Degen faced personally, and one he addresses frequently with clients.
As business owner, John is very much aware of the importance of planning. Unfortunately, his father’s massive stroke years ago prevented father and son working together. It is this kind of firsthand experience with the realities of business planning — or lack thereof — that gives John the perspective and ability to do critically meaningful work with his clients.
“You reach a point in the evolution of your business where success is no longer the end goal. The question is, ‘what am I leaving behind?’” he says. “I feel blessed to have the opportunity to guide my clients through this critical conversation, so that they can leave the legacy they envision. It is work that gives me significance,” he adds.
And so, it is that in helping his clients leave their legacy that John is shaping his own.
Building the Bridge to Succession
At Visioneers, we use bridge building as a metaphor for succession planning. You, the business owner, are on one side of the river and your goal is to get to your exit plan on the other side. Yet the river is roaring with the noise of important day-to-day issues such as profitability, taxes, litigation, customers, hiring, management, and more. It’s difficult to focus on the big picture when the everyday is robbing you of attention.
Our role is that of designer, planner and coordinator who collaboratively works with you and your other key advisors (attorney(s), CPA(s) and others) to help you as a business owner design, build and complete a successful bridge. We can assist you in each stage to ensure the successful transition of your business from growth, to succession, to exit and beyond.
